XRAYS AND 3D CONE BEAM XRAYS - February 2012

 

Bee Happy offer x-rays on site at both our Bendigo and Echuca offices thorugh the services of Victoria Dental Imaging Group (VDIG).  This is a free service that is bulk billed, but you must have your medicare card to use this service.

 

X-rays assist the Orthodontists in dagnosing treatment.  In some instances, normal 2-dimensional x-rays cannot adequately show a hidden tooth or other jaw/teeth problems.

 

Bee Happy is able to refer these patients to VDIG, Bundoora opposite RMIT University in Melbourne for a 3D - Cone Beam CT scan to help in more complicated diagnosis.  These services are also bulk billed so there are no out of pocket expenses.

 

 

 

 

 

ABOUT PSYCHOGENIC SEIZURES - February 2012

Psychogenic seizures originate from stress. A psychogenic seizure is an event not caused by physical disease, but by the conversion of emotional of distress into physical distress.  To the untrained eye the seizures can look like an epileptic seizure however they have an entirely different origin in the brain.

 

Meg would always lose consciousness prior to having a seizure and have periods of unconsciousness up to 1.5 hours.  There may be several seizures during this time.  The most effective way to diagnose these non-epileptic seizures is by video-EEG monitoring.

 

Psychogenic seizures can occur in people of all ages, from children to adolescents to adults. In fact, they are three times more common in females! In children and adolescents the stress triggers are more likely to be from childhood experiences, school or dating.  In adults, stresses that can cause these seizures may be due to work, family, relationships or financial concerns.

 

Psychogenic seizures can be diagnosed with 100% clarity. Treatment assumes the form of psychotherapy (seeing a trained professional in mental health issues), stress reduction techniques and even hypnosis. For anyone suffering these seizures the most important step is to accept the diagnosis and move on to treatment. While the perception is that seeing a psychiatrist is for ‘crazy’ people, that couldn’t be further from the truth in this case. These seizures occur independently; this means that it is not the sufferer’s fault, nor has the sufferer created the seizure, they just happen.

 

The main goal of seeking treatment is to reduce or eliminate the psychogenic seizure events. Often, the exact cause of the seizures can remain unknown. Following regular treatment, the seizures eventually disappear completely in 60-70% of adults. In children and adolescents this recovery rate is even higher.

 

Did you know…? 14% of young Australians aged 4 -17 years have mental health or behavioral problems with boys slightly more likely to experience these problems than girls.  Therefore, particularly in the youth of today, this is an issue that needs awareness and support.

Every patient has different needs so we offer a complimentary consultation to discuss with you treatment options, optimal timings, along with referrals for other specialist work that may be required.  Potential patients do not need a referral from a Dentist to use our services, although ideally we like to work with your Dentist to ensure optimal treatment and ongoing care of the teeth and gums.
